On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, Emerging Leaders of New York Arts and Young Professionals in the Arts hosted a Women in the Arts Mentorship Workshop about negotiation. The event took place at LMHQ in downtown Manhattan and featured Mara Manus from the New York State Council on the Arts and Pauline Willis from the American Federation of Arts. Before beginning a Q&A with the panelists, attendees went around the room to introduce themselves and to share what they were interested in learning more about. Attendees represented a variety of organizations including theaters, museums, dance companies, and galleries. Below are a few takeaways from the discussion:
- Manage expectations: When it comes to negotiating, it’s about managing expectations. What are you willing to accept and what is not negotiable? Think about how the negotiation can be a win-win for both you and your company.
- Think beyond your salary: Vacation time, work schedule, maternity leave, and responsibilities can all be up for negotiation.
- Never accept the first offer: When you respond, be sure to say that you’re excited for the offer but then provide information as to what you are countering with and why.
- Educate your supervisors: If you are negotiating your salary at your current job, be sure to educate your direct supervisor of your accomplishments so they are well-versed in your contributions. Provide the resources they need to negotiate on your behalf.
- Provide specific metrics: If an offer is denied, ask to revisit the offer in a specific period of time. For example, “I’d like to revisit the conversation about my job title at the end of the fiscal year.” Also try to get your supervisor to agree on a specific measurement of success. For example, “you’ll need to increase sales by 10% by the end of the calendar year in order to get a director title.”
